Hot off the heels of being named people’s choice for Best Coffee in the 2021 Canstar Blue Awards, ALDI Australia has taken home the Coffee Judge’s vote for Overall Large Chain Champion in Australia’s largest coffee roasting competition, The Golden Bean.

Over 1,100 entries were submitted to the 2021 competition that attracts the ‘who’s who’ of the Australian coffee world. Against a fierce line-up of bean brewers, ALDI Lazzio Coffee has won six medals across a range of categories, from Filter Coffee, to Espresso and Milk based Espresso beverages.

The win is the latest recognition for the incredible team at Black Bag Roasters. ALDI first partnered with the Victorian-based roasters in 2014 and has collected a plethora of awards, as well as a cult-following from customers, over the past seven years.

“We are delighted to be recognised for the third year in a row and take out The Golden Bean once again. Our partners at Black Bag Roasters work directly with the farmers to grow the highest quality coffee varietals for picking and processing. It is our mission that every cup of Lazzio coffee tastes barista-made so we are so pleased that our customers and the Coffee Judges can taste the difference and appreciate the great value,” said Varun Raheja, ALDI Australia Coffee Buying Director.

ALDI and Black Bag Roasters have collaborated to create an impressive range of blends, including Lazzio Medium and Dark Coffee Beans, Lazzio Medium and Dark Ground Coffee, Organic Ground Coffee, as well as a range of Single Origin Beans from Peru, Brazil, Colombia and Honduras available at select times of the year.

Origin Beans

It’s not just the taste that distinguishes Lazzio coffee from its competitors. Black Bag Roasters has invested time creating sustainable coffee products to ensure every coffee bean has been sourced responsibly and ethically. This means all Lazzio coffee supplied to ALDI is Fairtrade, Rainforest Alliance or UTZ (now part of the Rainforest Alliance) Certified, contributing to ALDI’s milestone of more than 80% of its coffee range now being sustainably sourced.

“This win is a testament to the ongoing product quality and consistency of our Lazzio beans. I am thankful for our coffee farmers, and our green bean buyers for maintaining their uncompromising quality standards. The team at ALDI has given us an opportunity to share the highest quality coffee with Australians across the country and provide amazing value every day. After seven years of partnership we couldn’t be more excited for what lies ahead,” said Lance Brown, General Manager at Black Bag Roasters part of the Nomad Coffee Group.
