ALDI Australia is today celebrating our two year anniversary in Western Australia, as we continue to expand across the state, driving down prices for shoppers and providing job opportunities and business growth for local suppliers.

On June 8 2016, we opened our first stores in Kwinana, Belmont Forum, The Square Mirrabooka and Lakeside Joondalup. On this day, hundreds of shoppers lined up from the early hours of the morning to be among the first to experience the ALDI shopping experience.

That excitement has continued with Western Australians embracing ALDI. Over the past two years, ALDI has invested in a state-wide expansion, opening 35 stores – which sees us at half of the total planned network of 70 stores – and completing more than 15 million customer transactions. We currently employ more than 550 people in Western Australia, across our corporate team, Jandakot Distribution Centre, drivers and stores. That number will grow to 1200 people in the coming years.

“The ALDI difference means we offer high quality products at everyday low prices. Our continued success in West Australia signifies that the community loves an alternative shopping experience,” said Anna McGrath, Managing Director, ALDI Western Australia.

Independent reports have consistently shown ALDI’s role in driving down grocery prices in places where stores are present. CHOICE’s 2017 Supermarket Survey found that our entry into both South and Western Australia positively impacted prices in those states, while Bankwest’s Future of Business: Focus on Supermarkets 2018 report attributed declines in Perth grocery prices to ALDI’s entry into Western Australia.

“ALDI is proud to be a driver of greater competition and we’re pleased to see the correlation between price deflation in WA and the presence of ALDI stores. All of our employees work hard to ensure we offer high quality products at everyday low prices and this is a fundamental difference and one we will never give away  ,” said Anna McGrath.

We have a ‘local first policy’ when sourcing our products, which is why the majority of our exclusive brands are made or grown by Aussie suppliers. In the past year alone, ALDI has more than doubled its Western Australia supplier base, to almost 100 local businesses. From wine to pork chops, flour and lasagne, we’ve sold more than 150 million products made by Western Australian suppliers since first opening in Australia in 2001.

Each of ALDI’s Western Australian stores feature our new store format. The new format provides shoppers with an enhanced in store experience with increased space for fresh food and healthy options, energy efficient lighting and chillers, as well as update signage and displays.

ALDI will continue to expand with a growing store network. Our long term expansion across the state will see up to 70 stores developed, providing even more grocery options, job opportunities and business for local suppliers.
