ALDI Australia has taken home the Coffee Judge’s vote for Overall Large Chain Champion in the world’s largest coffee roasting competition, The Golden Bean.

More than 800 coffee entrants were submitted across Australasia into the 2022 competition, which attracts the ‘who’s who’ of the coffee world.

The Large Franchise trophy went to Black Bag Roasters – Roasting for ALDI, with over 100 industry representatives serving as the Coffee Judges In the prestigious award. The award in this category will also mean ALDI’s Lazzio Coffee will now head to Hawaii to compete against other large Franchise winners in the Golden Bean World Series 2022 from 29 November – 2 December 2022. On top of the big win, ALDI’s Lazzio also scored 4 other Golden Bean medals in the ‘super-automatic’, ‘filter’, ‘chain-store espresso’ and ‘chain-store milk-based’ coffee categories.

ALDI first partnered with the Victorian-based roasters in 2014 and has collected a plethora of awards, as well as a cult-following from customers, over the past eight years.

In response to the award announcement, Varun Raheja, Buying Director at ALDI Australia said:

“We know Aussies love their coffee, and at ALDI we’re dedicated to ensuring every morning brew will be the best quality at the lowest price possible. Roasted in Melbourne, we developed the Lazzio Coffee range to bring customers a café experience at home, without the high price tag. Our aim is to always exceed our customers’ expectations, and we couldn’t be more excited and proud to see the Lazzio range recognised again in these awards.”

It’s not just the taste that distinguishes Lazzio coffee from its competitors. Black Bag Roasters has invested time creating sustainable coffee products to ensure every coffee bean has been sourced responsibly and ethically. This means all Lazzio coffee supplied to ALDI is Fairtrade, Rainforest Alliance or UTZ (now part of the Rainforest Alliance) Certified, contributing to ALDI’s milestone of more than 80% of its coffee range now being sustainably sourced.

“This impressive fourth consecutive win is proof that our Lazzio beans have consistently maintained their uncompromised quality standards from our farmers all the way to the cups of consumers. This acknowledgement at the World’s Largest Roasting Competition caps off an already incredible 2022 for ALDI “Lazzio Coffee” and Black Bag Roasters after also winning the Canstar Blue Award for Best Coffee for a second year in a row. We can’t wait to see where our eighth year of partnership with ALDI will take us,” says Lance Brown, Director of Sales at Black Bag Roasters part of the Nomad Coffee Group.
